The most common symptom of bad gas caps is likely a gas cap that is loose or a gas cap that will not completely tighten. This may seem insignificant, but if you don’t have an air-tight seal then the fuel system can be exposed to grime and dirt. If the gas cap is not fitting properly, check the rubber seal to make sure it’s not missing or brittle. If you own an older vehicle, make sure the metal gas cap is not damaged or bent. Both a bad seal or bent gas cap can contribute to the gas cap problems and may even require a replacement from the manufacturer.
What issues can a loose gas cap cause, well a check engine light just for starters? An ill-fitting gas cap will not only let fuel vapors escape the gas tank, but it can also let in grime and dirt. These vapors could produce errors in the emissions system, which could cause the check engine light to come on. Dirt and Grime that seeps into the gas tank could also damage fuel injectors over time. Perhaps the biggest sign of a bad gas cap is the gasoline smell inside your vehicle.
If your car wasn’t made with a capless fuel tank, it is not recommended that you drive without a gas cap installed. If your vehicle is a little older, there’s a chance that fuel could leak out from the tank during aggressive cornering or other enthusiastic driving. Driving your vehicle without a gas cap could lead to diminished fuel efficiency because the gas might evaporate without the correct seal on the gas tank. The smell is the gasoline evaporating from the gas tank, which can cause diminished fuel efficiency.
If you’ve already checked out the gas cap, the problems you are having may be due to contaminated fuel. If your vehicle has problems starting, will not accelerate, or just is not running right, then it’s entirely possible you just have contaminated gas.
